P&O Cruises has announced that P&O Adonia is set to join the fleet in 2011 to replace Artemis as a small cruise ship able to get into those ports that today’s monster ship just can’t reach. P&O Cruises have previously had an Adonia on their books, she now sails for Princess Cruises as Sea Princess.

P&O Cruises Adonia started life as R8 for the defunct Renaissance Line before transferring to Swan Hellenic as Minerva II. When Swan Hellenic was closed down, she is now alive again under different owners; Minerva II was placed in the hands of Princess Cruises and operated as Royal Princess. In 2011 she will be handed over to P&O Cruises as Adonia.

These R class ships are much sort after, Azamara Cruises has two of them, Oceania Cruises has 3 and Princess Cruises will be left with two, Ocean Princess and Pacific Princess when Royal Princess becomes P&O Cruises Adonia.

The ship is small by modern standards and is able to carry 710 passengers within its 30,277 ton structure. One thing that makes these ships so sort after is that 75% of the 355 cabins have balconies and the ship only has 23 interior cabins. P&O Cruises Artemis meanwhile had 600 ocean view cabins and no inside cabins, yet only had 152 (around 25%) with balconies.

P&O has announced that the P&O Cruises Adonia will, like Artemis and Arcadia become an Adult only cruise ship; in my mind, there is no more perfect replacement for Artemis than an R class of ship.
