Cruise Ships
When people think of large cruise ships they think of Titanic, in peoples minds she is one of the largest ships ever built. However by modern standards at 48,000 tons she would be classed as a medium-sized cruise ship.
There is still a need for ships of this size and smaller even though the trend is for cruise ships of over 100,000 tons carrying many thousands of passengers. The reason there is still a place for small ships is that some of the worlds most beautiful and untouched ports of call cannot cope with the size of modern day ships. Even some of the Mediterranean’s top ports require the large ships to use tenders to get their passengers ashore.
Due to the size of most of the new builds these days, such as Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas, even the largest ports of the world such as Southampton based in Hampshire in the UK have had to spend upwards of £10million to improve their berthing facilities to accommodate these new cruise ships. Southampton is also the home port of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, which before the Freedom Class of ships, of which Independence is one, was the largest cruise ship in the world.
